In 1976, at the age of 11, I fell in love with the British TV series Space: 1999 (first season). The philosophical adventures of the Moonbase Alpha residents and the Eagle spacecraft deeply fascinated me.
When the first Star Trek movie was released, American illustrator David Kimble created a beautiful poster featuring a cutaway view of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Inspired by this, I wanted to do something similar to honor my favorite spaceship. In the ’90s, thanks to the development of digital graphics, I finally could bring my project to life. In 1996, I published the first edition of my Eagle blueprints, achieving a good level of success thanks to the rise of the internet, which connected fans worldwide.
I then decided to further expand the three-dimensional view of the Eagle, placing her on one of the five launch pads of Moonbase Alpha, complete with a flight terminal and a telescopic boarding duct connected to the ship. The final result became a full color poster, printed in 1999 in a thousand copies.
My work caught the attention of the Eagle’s designer himself, Brian Johnson, who personally invited me to the Pinewood Studios, near London, where the series had been filmed more than twenty years earlier. A perfect closing of the circle!
