“When does an inanimate object become animate? When someone gives it life. And that is the beauty of the Jeffery Morris film, The Eagle Obsession. This film is one person’s journey to discover those that were also affected by the existence of the Eagle spacecraft as seen in the TV series, Space: 1999. Yet, the film goes beyond that. It covers a number of interviews of famous persons like Nick Tate and Barbara Bain who both starred on Space: 1999. Astronaut General Charles Duke who flew on Apollo 16. And William Shatner who needs no introduction. However, it was the interviews of those who made the series happen like Brian Johnson, who designed the Eagle. Or Jeffery’s childhood friend Dr. Anna Barab who played make-believe with him and then made it real. Or Jan Wenneberg who built his own Eagle that resides in his backyard in Denmark. To me, it was the students in the 5th grade class at University Ave. Elementary that impressed me the most. Young kids, interested in science and learning about the Eagle and building their own versions of the iconic spacecraft. The inspiration they show may cause them to grow up to become the astronauts who land on Mars or build the next generation of spacecraft to explore the great unknown.

This is the magic of the film. How those who watched Space: 1999 or were affected by other TV series, like Star Trek, to become better people because of the inspiration that science fiction and science fact offers them. And, since I am a child of the 1960s, like Jeffery, we can be disappointed with the progress of space exploration. But, like Jeffery, we can also be optimistic about the future and that is how he ends the film, on a high note. So, I can highly recommend this film to be scene and appreciate for what it is, a celebration of a fictional spacecraft, like the Eagle, and the TV series that spawn it, Space: 1999. Watch The Eagle Obsession and become obsessed with the love of science fiction that one day might become science fact.”

The overall pace and the introductions to the different sections were very pleasing; they moved the documentary along nicely, with no sluggish spots. And it was wonderfully narrated. It had a great mix of subjects that covered the Eagle spacecraft. Not only the Eagle’s beginnings and its design, but also Space: 1999’s production, its actors, and its fans. Your personal story woven throughout added so much to the documentary. Telling us about you growing up watching the space program and then Space: 1999 really resonated with me. I, too, believed Space: 1999 along with Moonbase Alpha and its Eagles were going to be in my future. Sadly, the 21st century did not turn out as I had dreamed. Watching The Eagle Obsession brought back for me an excitement and returned to me a feeling of creativity that I have lacked since I was first involved with Space:1999.
