Born in 1968, the first exposure to the Eagle would of course been the television series in its syndicated run. Here in Pittsburgh, it was Sunday evenings at 6pm. I would wait eagerly for that ITC logo animation to spin, the music sting finish, and off into another our of adventure. I was already a huge Star Trek fan, but the details of the sets, the miniatures, spacecraft designs such as the Eagle… showed a more believable world that I wanted to be in.
So that year for Christmas, as I would look through the department store catalogues, circle all the items I wanted… were many, but well aware had to narrow down to the most important, and the large Space: 1999 Eagle was it. The top of the list.
Flash forward to trying to fall asleep that Christmas Eve… finally achieving sleep… and that morning as we opened the presents, it was there. Paper coming off, and the box holding what I had wanted. Now sometimes after getting something you really wanted as a kid, after getting it there can be some let down. Well, it was not with this. If the subject ever comes up to this day about favorite gifts, that Space: 1999 Eagle was the best gift I ever received. (and not putting down other gifts, this was just the one)
Clearly remember putting it together, applying the stickers, and then as we prepped to go to my cousin’s house for Christmas day part 2, it came along with me. Picture attached is me on that day, outside with my older brother, cousins and of course, the Eagle. (Sorry it is blurry, it was the 70s)
I also still have it to this day. It had gone through some rough times of play, over moves some pieces got lost here and there, so I decided to detail it up a bit more. Picture added from it’s current place in my game room.
Cannot wait to see what Jeffrey brings us in this documentary, and to share the love of a spaceship that sparked the imaginations of so many.
